Caring For Yourself When Pregnant
November 1, 2009 | Leave a Comment
When you get pregnant, there are so many changes that take place in your body that make it impossible for you to continue living the way you were before you got pregnant.
In this article, I shall explore ways in which women can take care of themselves to protect both their bodies and babies from harm once they get pregnant.
Avoid using harsh chemicals on your skin. When pregnant, it is always advisable that you do things in moderation. The reason why beauty products work on your skin is that your skin absorbs them. Some of these chemicals may be harmful if they accumulate in the body. For this reason, it is advisable that when you get pregnant, take care of your skin by using mild cosmetics. Some harsh cosmetics have chemicals which when absorbed into the body, might damage the development of the child.
Do a lot exercises. Some people think that when they get pregnant, it is an excuse to stop exercising. However, our bodies can easily get adapted to a good amount of exercise if we allow it to. What matters however, is the nature of the exercise. Do not do exercises that will strain your back or cause you to have back injury. Instead do exercises that will make your body fit. This shall be extremely helpful during delivery.
Set your mind on positive things. Many women get easily depressed – what with the tough environment that they are living in. However, it is improper to maintain a negative attitude since this could jeopardize the life of the young child and its development. The important thing is to look at the positive things in life and forget about the things that beset us day and night.
Keep off drugs once you get pregnant. Drugs usually spoil the human body. The amount of damage that drugs can do to a fetus is enormous. Currently, there is no known safe amount of alcohol for a pregnant woman.
Do not take any medicine without the doctor’s approval. Even if you are suffering from a mild headache, do not make self-prescriptions once you get pregnant. Instead, always visit a qualified health practitioner who will inform you of the best way to handle your case.
Eat healthy. You should keep in mind that the food you eat is meant for at least two people. Take healthy foods especially those that are rich in vitamins and minerals such as calcium and iron which are helpful to pregnant women. Avoid foods that can easily poison you. These include foods such as raw eggs, unwashed vegetables, un-pasteurized milk, and so on.
Ensure that you go for prenatal visits once you get pregnant. Though this may seem common to many, some people still have myths about visits to the prenatal clinic. These visits are important because you are given the best advice on how to take care of you and the baby. Once you get pregnant, set up a plan on how often you need to be visiting your doctor. Do not rely on myths and internet advise. The prenatal visits will guide you on the vaccinations and detect any pregnancy complications before they arise.
