Are Several Smaller Meals Better for Weight Loss?
March 20, 2009 | Leave a Comment
Many of us grew up eating our meals at more or less scheduled times. Whenever possible, at least one of those meals would include the entire family.
This type of schedule allows parents to witness what children are eating (at least once during the day) and also creates a chance to bond for the family.
Today though, many diets recommend a grazing type of food consumption (several small meals) rather than sticking to 2 or 3 larger ones. The question than becomes if the overall calorie consumption is the same, should it really make a difference?
Blood sugar levels change even during slumber. It goes up after food digestion, but goes down after blood sugar digestion. That is when effects such as hunger, irritablility and headaches may begin.
It is suggested that an optimal level of metabolism can be achieved by stabilizing blood sugar levels. This might be accomplished by eating small meals often throughout the day. The higher energy level can make exercise more likely.
There are recent studies though that indicate that overall caloric intake must be reduced in order to lose weight regardless of how often meals are consumed. If true, then eating patterns may not have to be as restrictive.
One problem with meal skipping is that metabolism can slow down and cravings can be hard to control. It is more likely that one will engage in bad eating habits once they allow themselves to eat.
How often have you tried to reduce weight, but then ended up binging or overeating “comfort” foods either out of convenience or to counteract the hunger?
A way of life has to be redefined in the end. If weight loss is your goal, how are you most apt to consistently eat good, healthy food and limit your empty calories?
Family togetherness over the breakfast or dinner table is extremely important to many people. It may be the only time for some families to bond.
But “dieting” doesn’t have to eiliminate the opportunity to eat together. Try to make meal preparation and presentation enjoyable rather than setting a goal of creating a huge buffet “spread.”
I also highly recommend my all natural Weight Loss Breeze Program. It actually does not require special dietary restrictions and can be easily incorporated into any other healthy life style choices you are making.
