Today, it is becoming increasingly popular for people of all age and cultural groups to get some form of body art. Tattoos, which used to be somewhat taboo, are a particular favorite. While specific designs might change from time to time, there are still several popular themes that remain popular in the tattoo realm.

1) Tribal/Maori tattoos: Tribal tattoo designs can be a variety of designs, from long-established indigenous designs that date back hundreds of years to newer, more contemporary graphic designs. Maori patterns originate from Polynesia and are especially geometric in form. For the most part Maori designs are based on a central spiral shape.

2) Religious symbols: There are several different kinds of religious symbols, including the cross, angels, and crown. A cross can either be used to be representative of one’s faith, or used to memorialize a loved one. Angels can be worn as a sign of protection, or also used as a memorial. Crowns, especially thorny crowns, might be used in conjunction with a cross to show Jesus’ sacrifice. Crowns can also signify courage and authority.

3) Stars: The star, when used in a tattoo design, usually has meaning attributed to the number of points it has. Possible star designs are the Pentagram, Star of David, and the Nautical Star. Stars can represent light found in darkness, as well as forces of nature.

4) Butterflies: Butterflies are generally a theme that is chosen by women. The butterfly can represent beauty, femininity, and freedom. In Greek mythology, butterflies were a symbol for the soul.

5) Dragons: Dragon designs derive from Asian countries. Dragons represent the four elements, Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. Dragons are also neither good nor evil and characterize the power of the earth. Dragon designs might also be used to show command.

6) Words: Having phrases or single words is another popular tattoo design. Words are usually meant to memorialize a person, such as a parent or a child, but meaningful phrases are also used.

7) Flowers: Flowers are definitely one of the most popular designs. There are literally thousands of different types of flower designs, from willowy roses to perky daisies. Flowers can be combined with other designs as well, for a masculine/feminine approach.
8) Birds: Like flowers, there are many different types of bird tattoos. Eagles can symbolize strength and courage. The phoenix can represent overcoming obstacles. Even hummingbirds have their place in the tattoo world. Wings themselves can be spiritual, as well as stand for speed and freedom.

9) Fantasy designs: Unicorns, faeries, gnomes, and mermaids are all popular images found in the fantasy realm. One might wear a fantasy-inspired tattoo if they have an interest in the make-believe world. They can also be used for alternative religions.

10) Hearts: Hearts still remain as one of the most popular designs. They can be used with names in order to show off your feelings for a loved one, or they can stand alone on their own.

Specific popular tattoo designs change all the time, but general popular themes tend to remain constant. Most people tend to be looking for designs that are meaningful and representative of something that they strongly believe in. Of course, some people are also just looking for a something that looks good.
